Tata Steel manufacture steel through primary & secondary (scrap) routes and supply steel products to a variety of market sectors.  Tata Steel is one of the world’s most geographically diversified steel producers, with operations in 26 countries. The Environmental Technology Department forms part of the Group Environment Function and consists of 40 technical staff.

The  Sustainability team within the department comprises 5 full time experts, recognised within the steel industry as global sector life cycle assessment (LCA) leaders, with deep experience in collecting data, developing and applying sustainability assessment models in many market sectors, who are also fully engaged in development of standards, legislation and related policy aspects at national, regional and international level. In 2014, the department provided industrial supervision for 6 students who were working towards obtaining a PhD.
